When you overfill your fresh water tank, the excess water should run off and overflow as long as it has been properly vented. Many RVs, new and old, have good venting and overflow systems in place in case of overfilling. However, after accidentally overfilling your fresh water tank you should still check around your RV for damage.
Unfortunately, in some RV’s overflowing water can actually leak into the interior of your RV. This may cause serious mold or water damage in your camper. Sometimes this happens regardless of having a good overflow system or not. Water pressure can be really strong and if the water is powerful enough it may leak into your camper.
Thankfully, if you have an overflow, you should be able to identify very quickly if your fresh water tank is being overfilled. You can usually hear or see the water spilling out, even if you have stepped away from your camper for a second. Unfortunately, many times RV owners have overfilled is when they leave their water unattended.
To prevent overfilling your fresh water tank, DO NOT step away from your hose when filling the RV unless it is a real emergency. Even if you have an overfill system, you can still cause damage to your RV or fresh water tank. If the water is pouring at a powerful speed, the overfill may not get rid of enough water in time. This can cause your fresh water tank to rupture, this is also the case with your black water tank.
You should also be sure you that you check see how your water tank vents are sealed. Most vent caps are sealed with a large gap between the vent pipe and the edge of the roof underneath the cap. This way, your tanks are vented, but the gaps allow for excess water to flow out in case of an overflow.
After a water overflow incident, be sure just to check your RV over for any kind of damage whatsoever. Many people underestimate the power of water pressure, and while it seems unlikely, a few RV owners have had braces and frames bend from the weight of the water tank. You may want to consider adding some extra reinforcement to your freshwater tank in case of an overflow accident.
In order to prevent your fresh water tank from overflowing, make sure you do a few things. Make sure you do not leave the tank unattended when filling the tank, it only takes a few seconds for overfilling to cause permanent damage. Also run the water slowly, as painful as it may feel. This way if you need to step away, you have a little more time before your fresh water tank will overfill. Be sure to regularly check your RV for loose valves or vent caps, as you want them to be secure if your tank ever overflows.

How Do You Know When A Freshwater Tank Is Full?
Another common question with RV owners, is “How do you know a freshwater tank is full?”. There are a few different ways you can go about this, but it really all depends on what you are comfortable with. Many people simply wait until the water begins to come out of the overflow. Some people don’t like this because it risks overfilling your fresh water tank.
An alternate idea is using a water level indicator. Some RV’s have something similar already on the water tank that you can use as a gauge. If you don’t have one, there are a large variety of levels you can purchase online or at a local hardware store that you can use instead. Some you can attach to your tank, and some make a flashing light when you approach the fill line.
These are great ways to determine how full your tank is, as it can be hard for beginners at first. Eventually after you have filled your tank several times, you can take a better guess at how full the fresh water tank is. You can also identify how close it is to being full by the “burping” or “bubbling” sound that it makes closer to the end.
Like talked about earlier, you don’t need to worry about overfilling if you take the proper precautions. Many RV’s have very good overflow systems that will take care of spilled water. Just be sure you examine your RV afterwards for water damage or leakage. Also make sure you add some reinforcement to your fresh water tank in case of extreme overfilling, as water pressure is very heavy and may bend your braces.
Using a great water level monitor and keeping a close eye on your hose when filling the fresh water will keep you safe and prevent any potential overfilling. Also be sure you run the water slowly in case you need to step away from the RV, this way the water will take longer to fill the tank and maybe keep it from overflowing while you are away.
